Week 2A

In class, we've watched everyone's line animation as well as my own. We've given and received useful criticism to each other also. It was a fun little activity, but it also made us more familiar with Adobe Animate. My line had reflected the emotion hatred. Some of the criticism I've received was

  • Make lines more jagged
  • More erratic
  • Consider speed
  • Line consistency (length)

Later, we were given a simple tutorial in Adobe After Effects and were tasked to make a simple shape with text. The file had to have specific dimensions, frame rate, etc. The program seemed somewhat similar to Adobe Animate, as I've seen the same elements such as a timeline and some of the tools. Afterwards, we talked about our recent or past dreams which may be used in a future assignment or project.
Just last night, I've dreamt that I was taking a photography class. I was assigned to take pictures of nature and put them in a scrapbook to be reviewed by my professor, similar to a portfolio review. My professor flipped through the pages and immediately began to comment how bland and generic they were and ripped them out of my book one by one. I was trying to justify some photographs and my thought process on taking them. Oddly enough though, I didn't feel upset in the dream. It is also interesting to note that this took place in my middle school's nurse office, even though it was a college course and professor. I don't remember much else of the dream except that once I went home afterwards, my home looked very different. It had extra rooms and was put together almost like a maze. Even in the dream I knew it was bizarre, but it never struck me that I was dreaming. As I walked upstairs, the entire second floor was flooded. The inside of the bathroom was as large as a cave. I looked inside of our shower and saw an old friend sleeping inside of it. Somehow I had the vibe that they were homeless. I think I might have woken up at this point since I don't remember much after that.

Week 1 Outside of Class

Outside of class, I've finished creating my line representing hatred. When I visualize hatred, I imagine it to be rough, jagged, and moving downwards as it is a self-destructive emotion. What was challenging about this assignment was determining how a line representing hate would look different compared to a line representing anger, which is somewhat similar in a way. The way I differentiated the two was by recording myself demonstrating what hatred might look like. In my recording, I was more relaxed compared to how I may have looked if I demonstrated what anger would look like. I was able to put this into my animation by making the line not spike too often and keeping the pattern consistent. Although the assignment wasn't too difficult, it was very time consuming. It only makes me wonder how time consuming traditional animation was.

Week 1B

In class, we created a short 10-frame animation using a praxinoscope. Using this animation device, I was able to create the illusion of a pocket watch swinging back and fourth with some success. The most difficult part where I had run into issues was consistency with my drawings. Some of them were drawn off center, making the animation appear to be "jumpy" when placed inside the praxinoscope. Now that I understand how the device works, i'll be able to use it successfully next time.
We've also started a short assignment. We had chosen an emotion, in my case hate, and were tasked to create a single line animation that represents that emotion. For an example, a surprised line may be linear and suddenly spike. Since my line is suppose to represent hate, I imagine it will be jagged and maybe erratic.

Week 1A

Today was the first day of the course. We had viewed various videos that showed the power of motion design along with reviewing the syllabus. I believe this class will be extremely interesting for me, as I've been very interested in motion design but never had the opportunity to take a class in it or have had any prior experience with it. During the class, we've also done a quick exercise that showed motion design in a very basic way. By creating an illustration on both sides of a tag and spinning it quickly using string, it would create the illusion of one combined image.
